Environmental Concerns & US Presidential Elections

Published in Fit n Style in April 2008
As the Election campaigns in new Rome are moving ahead, the so called “Greene” of the global village becomes more involved in its outcome. It is true that we are not US Citizens & do not have the right to vote. However, we are a chunk of the population of this earth that is affected by the degradation in life quality due to gas emissions & other forms of pollution generated by Uncle Sam s Kingdom.
So, we are worried about tomorrow & the day after tomorrow. & we do ask questions, some of it is: is the United States of America going to sign KYOTOT Treaty? Is it going to be back on the path of sustainable development? Or the non renewable energy lobby in collaboration with the arm industry will continue to rule the world for another eight years & establish war projects wherever there is fuel?
We do yearn for the American dream of its founding fathers. We feel that the world is in need for g KENEDY or Roosevelt. The world is in need for a peace strategist not for worriers.
However, the indicators of the presidential debates in the empire are not encouraging at all. I hope that someday “ALGORE” ideas will yield to fruitition. If not the world will suffer for the benefit of few business men who tend to increase their profit portfolio at the expenses of the earth. I do not know how much the alarming message of the former next president of the United States of America, “An Inconvenient Truth”, will contribute in raising the awareness of the American public to environmental concerns before it gets too late.
Global warming effects are just the same as the green house effect; & are increasing due to the thickening of the layer surrounding the earth. Thus much more solar beams that are getting into the earth atmosphere are unable to get out & are transformed into shorter wave length (ultraviolet) that warms the earth surface & increase its temperature. The thickening of the layer surrounding the earth results from the emissions of CO2 & other gases due to human activities. US are the most important contributor to gas emission. Global warming is correlated with climate changes (increase in rainfall intensity in certain locations & drought in others, increase in tycoons' intensities, rise in sea levels, bad impacts on Biodiversity …).
It is worth mentioning that the current administration got out of KYOTO convention, which was meant to regulate & decrease gas emission in the world to preserve the planet, for its direct implication on increasing profits of certain cartels & business sectors such as non renewable energy & the arm industry.
Finally, the Global cause is becoming much more related to US presidency nowadays. & the fate of the planet is more & more at the hands of US citizens. So, we, people of the degrading planet, hope that Americans would become aware of this truth & elect a president who looks at the world around him differently to set a better future for the generations to come.
